A special court in Mumbai on Tuesday sent an aide of Shiv Sena MP Bhavna Gawli to 14-day judicial custody in connection with a money laundering probe by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Aide Saeed Khan was arrested on September 28 under various sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Khan was produced before Special PMLA Court Judge MG Deshpande here after Khan’s ED remand period ended on Tuesday.
Seeking Khan’s remand, the ED said that the accused played a very important role in the offense of money laundering.
In a remand application, the Federal Anti-Money Laundering Agency stated that Khan did not cooperate with the investigation and did not provide necessary information regarding the laundering of proceeds of the crime.
The ED said Khan is an influential person who can tamper with the investigation if he is not sent to judicial custody and requested the court not to release him pending the probe.
The ED is probing the money laundering aspect related to alleged financial irregularities in certain trusts linked to Ms Gawli, MP from Yavatmal-Washim Lok Sabha seat.
The probe agency had conducted searches at several premises in Yavatmal, Washim and Mumbai last month.
The case is based on an FIR against some of the accused for alleged fraud of Rs 18 crore and some related irregularities.
