McDonald’s Jumps on NFT Wagon, Releases 10-Piece Collection for Giveaway

McDonald’s US has launched its first non-fungible token (NFT). To mark the 40th anniversary of the McRib, McDonald’s is releasing a limited edition of 10 McRib NFTs in the US. These NFTs are not available for purchase but will be awarded to lucky winners, the company revealed on Twitter. The deadline to try and get one of the McRib NFTs is October 7.

Within hours, the post garnered over 60,000 retweets and 35,000 likes – indicating that over 60,000 people were trying to win McRibs NFTs. Virtual representations of real-life objects, NFTs are digital artifacts that can be purchased using cryptocurrencies.

The winners of the McDonald’s NFT giveaway will be announced later on October 12th.

This is not the first case of a food brand jumping on the high-speed NFT wagon in the recent past.

Earlier in March, Taco Bell became the first fast food brand to release an NXT collection. The company displayed five versions of “NFTacoBells” and sold five copies of each within 30 minutes on the trading platform Rarible.

In September, Burger Mammoth Burger King Partnered with NFT platform Suite to allow customers to scan QR codes and collect NFTs.

According to data from Market Tracker, NFT sales volume grew to $10.7 billion (about Rs 79,820 crore) in the third quarter of 2021, an eight-fold increase from the previous quarter. DappRadar.
