CES 2022: BMW Showcases an Electronic Paper-Wrapped Car Which Can Change Colour in an Instant

BMW has designed a car that can change colors in an instant. It takes advantage of the same low-power screen technology that ebook readers use. The customized BMW iX Flow has an outer shell made from E Ink’s electronic paper display technology, which uses tiny microcapsules of colored ink that rise or sink to change the vehicle’s appearance. It not only changes the color of the vehicle but also adds intricate patterns and designs if the owner so desires. The BMW iX Flow was showcased as a concept at CES 2022. There is no word yet on its mass production.

For now, advanced bmw The iX Flow relies only on black and white electronic paper, which adjusts the exterior finish of the vehicle from dark to bright, as per a report. gizmodo, Using this technology, the vehicle owner can change the color of the car to white to reflect sunlight and keep the interior cool during summers. It also reduces the pressure on the vehicle’s air-conditioning system. And owners can change it back to black during the winter season to help the interior absorb heat and stay relatively warm.

As we slowly move towards using more and more electric cars, this technology can come in very handy. Automobile experts agree that an electric car that can absorb sunlight can increase its battery life and range.

While the technology is impressive, it is too early to say whether we will see commercial production of electronic paper-wrapped cars. A big issue with these cars would be to fix a scratch on the paper, which comes very expensive. It is very easy and cheap to repair scratches on exterior paint.
